The story behind the video..and the camera...

ALEXA and Agnetha

Agnetha Faltskog, former member of the ABBA quartet, has released many solo albums since one of the 1970s' biggest bands dissolved. The Swedish singer's latest creation is very different from the pop music she was previously known for; the accompanying video is evidence of a more reflective, complex and nuanced style.

For the production of the WHEN YOU REALLY LOVED SOMEONE music video, a creative partnership between the DP and colorist were the key for a fast workflow. In spite of the speed of production, there is clearly no compromise in the artistic and technical quality of the piece. From the perspective of cinematographer Brian Strange, ALEXA was the camera of choice because its ability to record ProRes to in-camera SxS PRO cards meant a highly efficient workflow on set and reduced time spent in postproduction.

"The camera shows how far production technology has been perfected; it's really very hard to fault," observes Strange. "It's totally reliable, with unbeatable color reproduction. The Final Cut Pro workflow is fantastic, something the producers love for creating a fast rough cut. The menus, port positions and even the placement of the cables are absolutely spot-on. Each element saves the DP, assistant, producer, editor and colorist valuable seconds -- all this adds up over the course of a production to significant time savings and very real cost savings."

He continues, "As a DP I'm aware that the postproduction guys need to work quickly and don't want to have to spend time correcting images. Using the ALEXA is so intuitive that it's easy to get the shot the producer wants first time. I'm always confident that the ARRI camera will capture very sharp, data-rich files that are easy to work with in post."

Using the ALEXA is so intuitive that it's easy to get the shot the producer wants first time.

Despite needing to create three individual looks for the video, colorist Mazin Power was able to complete the grading in a single day. Rather than spending time fixing files, Power says that with ALEXA he can focus purely on creativity. He remarks, "Because the video was shot with ALEXA, the Log C files were very rich in information. The color fidelity is always incredibly accurate, highlights are well controlled and skin tones are great. It's exactly what we need in postproduction."

With the Agnetha project, the colorist was tasked with the challenge of creating a number of distinct looks for different parts of the video: a desaturated flashback sequence featuring young actors, a warm contemporary scene with Agnetha in front of a golden mirror and finally the on-stage performance shots. "For each sequence we applied a very different look," notes Power. "The ALEXA files coped incredibly well with adjustments to sharpness and skin tones, resulting in a beautiful finished product. Shooting with ALEXA makes postproduction so much easier."

A Deluxe out now

Agnetha's album 'A' is released in Germany, Austria and Switserland as a Deluxe version.

'A' Deluxe includes the video to 'When you really loved someone' and the one hour BBC documentary on Agnetha on the bonus DVD (which is great, but in fact the only appearance of Agnetha where she actually does not look that good -not as good as in London anyway)

The documentary however is so well done and a true must have for all Agnetha/ABBA fans. All the important people in Agnetha's life -past & present- are interviewed and the show is quite revealing. The highlight of course being the interviews done in the studio while recording 'A'.

Being the leadsinger of ABBA it is very nice that her former bandmates Bjorn and Benny are there too just to point out how instrumental Agnetha has been to the ABBA music.

The booklet of 'A' Deluxe does include some bonus artwork, which is lovely.
'A' Deluxe can be bought internationally via Amazon.de

Agnetha sings with Gary at BBC 'Children in Need' gala

See here the first pictures of Agnetha and Gary sing their duet on stage.

Agnetha came to London this morning and is on stage tonight with Gary Barlow at this very moment at a Children In Need Concert in London.

The concert will be , airing at the BBC TV on Friday 15th November.

Get those recorders ready!

The UK Dailymail newspaper freaks out on a stunning arrival of Agnetha in the UK

Mamma Mia... she looks good!

Rarely-seen ABBA singer Agnetha Faltskog cuts a very youthful figure as she arrives in the UK

She's remained largely out of the spotlight for the past decade, and prefers to live the quiet life at her isolated Swedish home.
And pop icon Agnetha Faltskog's laid-back way of life certainly seemed to be working as she cut a very youthful figure while arriving at London's Heathrow Airport on Tuesday morning.
The former ABBA frontwoman looked decades younger than her 63 years, and appeared happy and relaxed as she showcased her radiant make-up free skin while wandering through the arrivals terminal.

Rolling back the years: Pop icon Agnetha Faltskog's laid-back way of life certainly seemed to be working as she cut a very youthful figure while arriving at London's Heathrow Airport on Tuesday morning

Grinning from ear-to-ear as she emerged from the airport alongside a group of pals, the singer was utterly glowing as she showed off her wrinkle-free skin and youthful blonde locks.
Agnetha opted for a low-key ensemble as made her way into the city, teaming a gun-mental grey leather jacket with a simple black vest and jeans.
The Dancing Queen hitmaker completed her casual look by toting a white leather handbag, and wore practical black leather boots on her feet.

Since bowing out of ABBA in 1982, the songstress has stayed largely out of the public eye - despite formerly being one of the world's most recognisable faces.
And although she has amassed a fortune worth an estimated £20million, she recently admitted she prefers the simple things in life.
Speaking in an interview with the Mail's YOU magazine earlier this year, she said: 'I live on a farm and there is a little bridge to get to Stockholm. I live a normal life there with my pug Bella and my puppy Bruno.

'I chat to other dog walkers, I go shopping and out to restaurants with friends. I don’t mind signing autographs as long as there’s not a queue forming. Maybe I was a recluse for some years. I was so tired once Abba was over and just wanted to be calm and with my children.
'I married, was in Abba, had my children, divorced, all in ten years. I wonder how I managed it, but I was young.'
But Agnetha recently hinted at an ABBA comeback ahead of the 40th anniversary of the group's first hit, Waterloo - despite the band turning down an incredible $1billion to reunite back in 2000.
She told German newspaper Welt am Sonntag: 'Of course it’s something we’re thinking about.
There seem to be plans to do something to mark this anniversary in some way. But I can’t say at this point what will come of them.'

Agnetha talks ABBA anniversary. Like we said.. something BIG might happen!

Agnetha Fältskog, leadsinger of the Swedish pop band ABBA has hinted of the prospect of a reunion of the legendary group. "Sure, we think about it," the said singer of the group in "Welt am Sonntag"
"In April 2014, it will be 40 years ago that we won with 'Waterloo' the Euro Vision Song Contest in Brighton. There are plans to make something out of this anniversary, but I still do not know what will come of it. Nor do I want to know now so early"

Agnetha was the one in the group  that often made too many hesitation about a reunion in the past, the 63-year-old sais now.

"If such an event would take place, and I knew well in advance, I would break my head over it all the time. It would consume all my energy." Fältskog wants the event just to happen: "Not think about it - just do it." The Swedish pop quartet had dissolved in 1983 and, to date, they have sold more than 380 million records and are in addition to the Beatles the most successful pop formations of all time.

Agnetha, who was recently celebrated her solo album "A" - got acknowledged by critics worldwide -further said that age plays a role. "Yes, time trickles on. We're all getting older," she told the "Welt am Sonntag", "I can not imagine that we would go on stage with crutches."

In recent years, there has apparently been a rapprochement within the band, which consisted of the two couples Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus and Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson. Both couples had divorced in the late seventies and early eighties. "I often dream lately about the other three members of ABBA," Faltskog said, "They are are good dreams. They seem to be part of the process when the ice would melt off somewhere. ABBA is a big part of all of us. Still. "
